Minimum Wage Increase Comes To Workers At BWI Marshall Airport: What To Know

ODENTON, MD — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced Monday that a minimum wage increase was coming to BWI Marshall Airport workers.

The pay increase was unveiled during a Labor Day event with Maryland Secretary of Transportation Katie Thomson and 32BJ SEIU leadership.

The minimum wage increase to $18 an hour is specifically being implemented for BWI Marshall Airport workers directly contracted by the Maryland Aviation Administration.

The increase took effect immediately. Prior to the pay bump, the hourly rate was $17.

"To keep BWI competitive, we believe that employers that serve the airport must make a meaningful increase to its minimum wage with annual increases and paid leave for employees covered by the Secure Maryland Wage Act," Moore said in a release.

"Employers must also provide covered airport workers with a health and welfare supplement to ensure these workers have a path to receive quality, employer-paid health insurance."

Moore also stated that emergency legislation would be introduced during the 2027 legislative session to raise the minimum wage for indirect contract employees through the Secure Maryland Wage Act, which expires in December.

The emergency legislation would impact between 700 and 800 individuals.
