MoCo's New Traffic Cameras Are Coming After Green-Light Speedsters

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Speed demons, beware: new traffic cameras looking to catch drivers speeding through green lights are coming this year.

The new traffic initiative falls under the county's Vision Zero project and is part of a larger effort to clamp down on dangerous driving.

Red-light cameras will be upgraded to detect excessive speeding when the signals shift to a green light at the following intersections:

• Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue
• Colesville Road and University Boulevard

Similar to other cameras, citations will be issued once a speeding driver is detected going more than 12 mph over the posted speed limit.

The cameras are expected to take effect by the end of the year.

A 15-day warning period will be issued before enforcement gets underway, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

The county currently operates over 70 red-light cameras and is in the process of implementing speed cameras under a new automated-enforcement contract. Earlier this year, new bullet-resistant cameras were stationed throughout the region.
