Baltimore Artist Sarah Butcher Opens New Exhibition at First & Franklin Church on Sept. 10 — Launching this year’s “Art Under the Spire” Series.

Baltimore’s arts community will have a new stop to add to their September calendar. On Thursday, September 10, as First & Franklin Presbyterian Church begins its Art Under the Spire exhibition series with an opening reception featuring new work by Baltimore artist Sarah Butcher.

The event runs 5–9 PM and is free and open to the public.

Timed alongside the Bromo Art Walk, the opening offers art lovers an additional opportunity to explore local creativity in one of Baltimore’s most historic architectural spaces. Visitors heading to the Art Walk are encouraged to stop by First & Franklin to experience Butcher’s newest collection — a vibrant mix of botanical, atmospheric, and contemporary works created in her signature bold palette.

When we asked Sarah about her work she told us
“I work in a series of 2 to 5 paintings and my visual style may change from series to series because I paint in response to what I’m feeling, not from a strict formula. I’m always experimenting with composition or blending processes -for example using digital and traditional mediums in the same piece. In the end I want each piece to sing, or at least speak, to whoever stands in front of it.”

The exhibition marks the first installment of Art Under the Spire for the 2026 - 2027 season. Art Under the Spire is designed to spotlight Baltimore‑area artists and activate the church as a cultural gathering place.
