Nearly 300 MA Layoffs Looming, With 4 More Employers Making Cuts

MASSACHUSETTS — The commonwealth has seen a recent wave of job layoffs, and they extend beyond the much-publicized closures of two Bay State colleges.

Anna Maria College, in Paxton, and Hampshire College, in Amherst, both have announced plans to shut their doors, putting a total of roughly 350 people out of work.

But then there was more bad employment news.

At the end of last week, four employers across Massachusetts announced terminations totaling 283 jobs, according to state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filings.

The employers include three health care providers:

• Community Counseling of Bristol County, which plans to end 52 jobs in that area between June 30 and July 13;
• Community Healthlink, which is making 78 cuts by June 30 in Leominster, Webster and Worcester; and
• Innovative Care Partners, which is laying off 70 workers by the end of June in Northampton, Pittsfield and West Springfield.

In addition, Compass Group USA is eliminating 83 food service jobs by July 1 in Boston, where the Museum of Fine Arts did not renew its contract with the company, according to MassLive and other sources.

In January, the MFA said it was laying off 33 of its employees, roughly 6 percent of the workforce, due to an expected $13 million budget shortfall.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in March, a slight downtick from the February level of 4.8 percent – but otherwise the highest rate in nearly four years, according to the state’s most recent data.
