• DPW Building Committee Seeks to Hire Designer by July. Swing Space for DPW Workers? Maybe Not (amherstindy.org) — Amherst officials are moving ahead with hiring a designer for a new $35 million DPW building, aiming to select a firm by mid-July and start construction in 2028. At the same time, they’re struggling to find safe temporary space for DPW staff and vehicles before an October 1 move-out deadline, weighing options like Ruxton, Wildwood School, and possible rentals from Hampshire College.

• Historical Commission Approves Demolishing Rear of 174 Amity for Construction of Affordable Townhouses (amherstindy.org) — Amherst’s Historical Commission has cleared the way to demolish the rear section of 174 Amity Street so Amherst Community Land Trust and Habitat for Humanity can create permanently affordable townhouses there. Commissioners also discussed the likely demolition of Amherst College’s Blair House on Northampton Road and briefly reviewed new downtown design standards before a thunderstorm cut the meeting short.

• John Leonard Signs Extension With Detroit (griffinshockey.com) — An Amherst native, forward John Leonard has signed a one-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings after a standout season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. The 27-year-old led Grand Rapids in goals and points, earned AHL Second All-Star Team honors, and appeared in 11 games with Detroit this season, notching four points.
