Boston Fire Department Places Patch On Engine In Honor Of Fallen Member: Report
The father of two died in the line of duty this past weekend.
BOSTON, MA — The Boston Fire Department is honoring its member who died in the line of duty this past weekend with a permanent dedication, according to a report from 7 News Boston.
A patch designed by Robert Kilduff Jr. himself has been placed on the rescue two engine that the fallen firefighter himself worked on. It is meant to honor the memory of Kilduff and the commitment he gave to the department for decades.
Lieutenant Gilbert Quichia said Kilduff’s patch was extremely popular when he first dawned it multiple years ago, and it soon became synonymous with both Kilduff and the truck he worked on. Now, he said the return of the symbol will remind him and his peers “what they are missing.”

Before Kilduff’s death, he was a driving force behind honoring another former Boston firefighter who lost his life while on the job. Kilduff had a memorial plaque honoring Charles Buchanan placed on the firehouse, named an engine after him, and gave his daughter a badge of honor. Buchanan died in 1947.
Kilduff worked for the Boston Fire Department for 24 years after serving in the United States Marine Corps. He also worked at the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts and was a member of the International Association of Firefighters. He fell from the third floor of the Dorchester home while battling a three-alarm fire on Saturday, May 23 and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
