Celtics Give Boston Children's Hospital Historically Large Donation
The Celtics will recognize current and former hospital patients, families, staff, and others with ties to Boston later this week.
BOSTON, MA — Boston Children's Hospital has announced a gift of more than $200 million from the Boston Celtics ownership group and the team, in association with the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation.
The donation represents the largest gift in the hospital's history and will support pediatric care, research, nurse training, and community programs. The total includes Rob and Karen Hale's previously announced $100 million donation, according to The Boston Globe.
The funding will help support a new pediatric mental health facility in Brighton and earlier interventions for children in crisis. It will also support research into emerging therapies for childhood diseases and the origins of adult diseases, advanced training for pediatric nurses, an innovation fund, and family-centered programs focused on healthy lifestyles.

“While the size of this gift is unprecedented for Boston Children’s Hospital, its significance will ultimately be measured not by the record it sets, but by the lives it will save,” Boston Children's Hospital CEO Dr. Kevin Churchwell said in a statement.
Boston Children's and Franciscan Children's celebrated the groundbreaking for the Brighton campus on Oct. 8. The $640 million project is expected to nearly double Boston Children's inpatient psychiatric capacity, according to project participant VHB. Planned services include inpatient psychiatric care, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, rehabilitation, and other treatment options.

Once complete, the campus will feature single-bed inpatient rooms, specialized programs for children with autism or intellectual disabilities, and accommodations for parents to stay near their children. Plans also include laundry and kitchenette facilities and a Family Resource Center where caregivers can work remotely or access support.
“The Celtics have historically been defined by the concept that true legacy is more than what happens on the court,” Boston Celtics Chairman and Governor Bill Chisholm said. “Boston Children’s and the Celtics share a belief that it takes every single one of us to achieve our most ambitious goals. This gift is our commitment to the next generation in Boston and far beyond. We all win when we invest in our children’s futures.”
The hospital announced the Hales' $100 million gift in December 2025 to support behavioral health care and a new building on the Brighton campus. Franciscan Children's became part of the Boston Children's health system in 2023. The campus will also support research, clinician training, and community partnerships.
“I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand the extraordinary work being done at Boston Children’s Hospital and the difference it makes for patients and families,” Celtics Co-Owner Rob Hale said. “Through this gift, the Celtics and Boston Children’s Hospital can help advance groundbreaking research, expand access to exceptional care, and create opportunities to improve the lives of children for years to come.”
The Celtics will recognize current and former hospital patients, families, staff, and others with ties to Boston Children's during their home game Friday, Oct. 30.
