Brookline Resident Running For Congressional Seat As A Republican

BROOKLINE, MA — A resident is challenging U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss for his Congressional spot this coming fall from the other side of the political aisle.

Republican Tom Stalcup launched his campaign earlier this month titled “Science over Politics.” Stalcup holds a PhD in physics and is the founder and president of Upward Innovations, Inc. a technology company also based in Brookline. According to Stalcup, his business designs and manufactures environmental monitoring systems that are used throughout the world.

“Earlier in my career, I conducted research at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, studying complex materials under extreme conditions,” Stalcup said. “My work has always been grounded in data, evidence, and solving real-world problems.”

Foreign policy, economy, education, environment, and tax reform are all named as pillars of Stalcup’s campaign. However, healthcare cost is the issue he places the largest emphasis on.

“I went without health care for years after college because I couldn’t afford it. Then came a system that claimed to solve the problem—but forced people to buy coverage they still struggled to afford. That experience made one thing clear: the problem is cost,” Stalcup said. “Instead of addressing those costs directly, Congressman Jake Auchincloss sides with Big Pharma and shifts the blame.”

Stalcup is a former Democrat who reportedly defected from the party a decade after he felt Bernie Sanders was jointly opposed by Hillary Clinton and other more moderate Democrats in the 2016 presidential primaries. Stalcup was previously an independent until earlier this year.

Stalcup officially launched his campaign on Saturday, April 4 at the Biogen Laboratory in Cambridge. As the only Republican currently running for the position, he is slated to face the winner of the Democratic primary in November. Auchincloss is being challenged in the primary by Democrats Chris Boyd and Jason Poulos.
