Amgen opened its Cambridge research center in 2001, establishing a presence in Kendall Square as the neighborhood continued developing into a major center for biotechnology research. The company’s connection to the property dates to 1992, when it purchased the land where the facility would eventually be built.

The company completed a major renovation of the Cambridge facility in 2017, adding updated laboratories and offices, a laboratory used to scale up drug-development processes, and an interactive lobby highlighting its research and patient stories. At the time, Amgen reported investing approximately $100 million in the facility since 2015.
Amgen’s local partnerships have also included support for early-stage biotechnology companies. In 2014, the company became a platinum sponsor of LabCentral, a shared laboratory facility in Cambridge. The agreement allowed Amgen to nominate up to two life sciences and biotechnology startups each year to take up residence in LabCentral’s Kendall Square facilities.
