About 1.3 million students entered the 2027 competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in fall 2025 and meeting other program requirements, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The organization identified about 50,000 high scorers nationwide, including approximately 34,000 Commended Students. Commended Students receive letters recognizing their academic promise but do not advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarships. Some may be considered for corporate-sponsored Special Scholarships.
