• State regulators double down on horseshoe crabs (newbedfordlight.org) — State regulators are ramping up monitoring of horseshoe crabs as biomedical demand for their blood and bait use raise conservation concerns, and new roles are being created to focus on the species. While some areas like Wareham’s Swifts Beach are struggling, Stage Harbor in Chatham just set records for spawning crab counts, underscoring the town’s importance to the species’ recovery. 
• Massachusetts Reminds Anglers: Shore-Based Shark Regulations Are in Effect (onthewater.com) — State fisheries officials are reminding anglers that heavy shark-fishing gear is banned along much of the coast, including all of Chatham Harbor and Monomoy Island, to reduce risks from white sharks. Shore-based fishermen can still use lighter tackle for other species, but must avoid chumming by day and follow strict release practices if they hook a shark.
