Join the&nbsp;Chelmsford Historical Society&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Tsongas Industrial History Center&nbsp;for a special April vacation event that brings the past to life! “From Sheep to Shop: A Hands-On History Adventure” is a family-friendly program that explores the fascinating journey of fiber, tracing the path from raw wool to finished fabric.
This event will take place on Tuesday, April 21 at the Barrett-Byam Homestead, 40 Byam Road, Chelmsford. Drop in anytime between 12-3pm. It is free and open to families and children ages 6 and up, but please RSVP to info@chelmhist.org in advance so we have an approximate count of attendees.
Step back in time as you rotate through interactive stations led by museum teachers:
-The Prep Work:&nbsp;Get hands-on with wool carding and see how raw fleece becomes soft, workable fiber.
-The Spin &amp; Weave: Watch live demonstrations of traditional drop spinning and weaving techniques.
-Be the Maker: Children can "try their hand" at the craft by practicing on table looms.
-Shop: Imagine what the past was like as you visit the Chelmsford Historical Society’s spinning and weaving artifacts and General Store exhibit.
Every young historian will also receive a&nbsp;take-home cardboard loom&nbsp;and materials to continue their weaving journey at home. It’s a perfect blend of local heritage, industrial ingenuity, and creative fun!&nbsp;

Computer hard drives will be destroyed during the recycling process, but can be removed on-site at the event for an additional charge. Please join us at the Chelmsford Historical Society’s Annual Meeting and Dinner on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 5:30-8:00pm.

The highlight of the evening will include the presentation of the Guardian Award, an award given each year by the Society to a person or organization best exemplifying Chelmsford’s motto "Let the Children Guard What the Sires Have Won." This year the award will be presented to Andy Wilson for his preservation of 3 Chelmsford Street in Chelmsford center (previously known as 6 Billerica Road). The house was built circa 1765 and moved to its present site in 1810. Andy’s father purchased the house in 1975, and his family has been responsible for its upkeep since then.
To begin this special night, we will enjoy dinner catered by Mr. Jack’s Catering in the Ralph Parlee Agricultural Center at the Barrett-Byam Homestead, 40 Byam Road, Chelmsford. The menu will be salad, a selection of Italian entrees, and dessert. Non-alcoholic beverages are included. If you would like an alcoholic beverage, like a favorite bottle of wine, please bring it with you.

Seating is limited so please send your name, phone number, number of people attending, and check payable at $30/person to the Chelmsford Historical Society by Monday, April 27, 2026. (Reservation request and annual membership information on separate form.) Tickets can be picked up at the door of the event.

As the trees begin to bloom in the Chelmsford area, everybody’s thoughts turn to Spring, and it’s time for the Chelmsford Community Band to celebrate the final performance of their regular season.&nbsp; Join them on Sunday, May 3, at 2pm in Chelmsford’s McCarthy Middle School for their annual tradition of a joint performance of the Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble accompanied by the ever-popular “basket” raffle fundraiser. Sections of the band and local businesses have donated fantastic prizes representing various fun and engaging themes.&nbsp; Check out the band’s social media on Facebook, Instagram, or BlueSky for sneak peaks at the donations.

The Concert Band, led by Westford resident and Chelmsford band teacher Eric Lindsner, will present a program themed on travel.&nbsp; The music will take you on a journey both abroad and back home.&nbsp; The Jazz Ensemble will feature swing and jazz favorites, led by Art Bakopolus.&nbsp; Admission to the concert is free, but donations are always very gratefully accepted so that the band can continue to operate.&nbsp; Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $20 for families.&nbsp; Baked goods can be taken home for a small additional donation.

The Chelmsford Community Band is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and has a 75-piece concert band and a 20-piece jazz ensemble made of dedicated volunteer musicians with a proud tradition of bringing live musical performances to this community since 1972.&nbsp; They are supported by grants from local businesses, arts organizations such as the Chelmsford Cultural Council, and your donations.&nbsp; Follow them on Facebook, Instagram, or BlueSky, and find them online at <a href="https://www.chelmsfordcommunityband.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.chelmsfordcommunityband.com</a>.
