1. Black bear sightings increase across Massachusetts neighborhoods (shrewsburypost.com) — Fitchburg residents recently reported a black bear near the top of Highview Street, part of a broader rise in bear sightings across Central Massachusetts. Wildlife officials say bears are most active in warmer months and urge people to secure trash, remove outdoor food sources, supervise pets, and keep a safe distance if a bear passes through their neighborhood.
   

2. Dean Tran's NH sister gets 2 years supervised release, must pay $40K fine for role in COVID fraud (unionleader.com) — A former state senator from Fitchburg, Dean Tran, faces additional prison time and financial penalties tied to a COVID-era unemployment fraud scheme involving a fake job letter from his sister, who also received two years of supervised release and a $40,000 fine. Tran’s legal troubles also include prior convictions for wire fraud, tax offenses, and stealing a constituent’s firearm.
   

3. Mount Wachusett holds Veterinary Technology pinning ceremony (sentinelandenterprise.com) — Mount Wachusett Community College recently honored its Veterinary Technology Class of 2026, including graduates from Fitchburg, at a pinning ceremony in Gardner. Two Fitchburg residents, Nevin Guy Arseneault and Stephanie Shea, were recognized alongside classmates from surrounding towns for completing the rigorous program and preparing to enter the veterinary field.
   

4. National Grid begins massive project to upgrade lines in Central Mass. (telegram.com) — Fitchburg is one of several North Central communities where National Grid will upgrade a major 47-mile transmission line, a $474 million project funded by ratepayers across New England. Work is expected to begin this summer, replace old lattice towers with monopoles, remove trees along the corridor, and improve long-term reliability without planned power shutoffs during construction.
