First Lutheran Church traces its roots to Oct. 26, 1893, when a group of Swedish immigrants in Malden and Everett organized the congregation after Harvard Divinity School student Jonas P. Dahlin began leading worship services for local families. The congregation later purchased land at the corner of Church and Waite streets, where its church building was dedicated on Oct. 10, 1897. Over the following decades, the campus expanded to include a parish house, a new steeple and other improvements while continuing to serve the community.
The church's history also includes a 1966 merger with Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Everett, helping shape the congregation that continues to worship at the Maplewood property today. According to the church, First Lutheran remains part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and continues to hold weekly worship services.
