Melrose Announces Eventful Memorial Day Schedule
Ceremonies, a school assembly, cemetery events and a food drive are planned in Melrose throughout 10 days.
MELROSE, MA — The city has announced the official schedule of Memorial Day week ceremonies and observances, with events planned from Wednesday, May 20 through Friday, May 30. The festivities are meant to honor members of the military who lost their lives in service to the country and their families.
The events are organized by the Melrose Veterans Advisory Board, Melrose Director of Veterans Services Tammy Shovelton, Melrose Public Schools, the Department of Public Works, and other community organizations. The schedule includes ceremonies, a school assembly, volunteer opportunities and a food drive.
The first event is set for May 20 with the rededication of Otis W. Bishop Square at Trenton Avenue and Washington Street. On Friday, May 22, Melrose Public Schools will hold a Memorial Day Assembly at Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School on 360 Lynn Fells Parkway. Breakfast begins at 8 a.m., and the assembly begins one hour later.

Local veterans are encouraged to RSVP and attend the school assembly. Veterans wishing to attend are encouraged to call the administration at 781-979-2100 and provide their name, branch and dates of service.
Two events are scheduled for Saturday, May 23, at the Wyoming Cemetery on 205 Sylvan St. Volunteers are needed for flag placement at veterans' graves beginning at 9 a.m. A flag retirement ceremony will follow at 11 a.m.

The city's Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at The Knoll on Lynn Fells Parkway, opposite Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School. The final event on the schedule is a Veterans Advisory Board food drive on Saturday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shaw's supermarket on Essex Street. Proceeds of the drive will benefit both the Veterans Food Mart and Melrose food pantries.
