Somerville Set To Share Broadway Magoun Redesign Concepts

The public is invited to an open house event early next month.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city is hosting a public open house to share preliminary design concepts for the stretch of Broadway that runs through Magoun Square on Wednesday, May 6. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Arthur D. Healey School Cafeteria on 5 Meacham St.

More than 500 community members have shared their views on the corridor thus far. According to the city, the concerns included were long crossings, congestion, speeding and red light running. The city said the new concepts are intended to address those issues and create a safer, more comfortable experience for people using the street.

The project focuses on Broadway between Winchester Street and Central Street. Along with repaving the roadway and rebuilding the sidewalks, the preliminary concepts include safer crosswalks, protected bike lanes, improvements to the bus rider experience, parking regulation changes, accessibility improvements, changes to traffic operations at signalized intersections, and new space for tree and greenery plantings.

Community members who attend the open house will be able to review the concept designs in more detail and speak directly with the project team about questions and comments, according to the city. Somerville's Mobility Division is organizing the event.

The city said the effort is informed by community feedback and data gathered. It is also tied to Somerville's Vision Zero commitment, which the city described as an initiative with the goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injury. It is also informed by the City's Bicycle Network Plan, which it described as a roadmap to expanding bicycle safety and features across the city.
