Melrose Police To Host Bike Rodeo For Kids This Fall

MELROSE, MA — The police department is inviting local children to take part in the city's first Bike Rodeo this fall, with the free program aimed at students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, with applications expected to become available soon. The Bike Rodeo is being organized in partnership with Safe Routes to School, Tufts Medicine MelroseWakefield Hospital and The Ride Cafe.

Safe Routes to School is a statewide program that works with schools, law enforcement agencies, public health departments and community organizations to encourage students to safely walk, bike and roll to school. The program is sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation with funding from the Federal Highway Administration.

Melrose has previously been recognized for its work with the program. The Melrose Pedestrian and Bicyclist Committee received a MassDOT Safe Routes to School Community Collaboration Award, while the committee and The Ride Cafe have both been listed among the program's alliance partners.

The Ride Cafe, a bike shop on Main Street in Melrose, has also offered learn-to-ride classes for children, with lessons focused on building riding skills and confidence while introducing basic street safety.

Youth cycling programs have also expanded around Melrose schools in recent years. Volunteer-run "bike buses," where groups of families bike or scooter to school together, have operated at Lincoln, Winthrop and Horace Mann elementary schools. Melrose police have previously joined local students taking part in the rides.

“Special thanks to Safe Routes to School, Melrose Wakefield Hospital, and the Ride Cafe for partnering with us to make this possible,” the department said.

Police have not yet announced a time or location for the event.
