• Newton's West Nile Virus Risk Raised To High (patch.com) — Newton residents are being urged to take extra precautions after state health officials raised the city's West Nile virus risk level to high, following this year's first human case in Middlesex County. Local leaders recommend limiting outdoor activity at dusk and dawn, using EPA-registered repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water around homes, while Newton Health and Human Services remains available to answer questions.
   

• Laredo administration to reorganize DPW, sustainability leadership (newtonbeacon.org) — Newton's DPW is being reorganized to fold in the Office of Sustainability, creating a new deputy commissioner of sustainability and administration and a director of organizational performance. Mayor Marc Laredo's plan elevates climate and waste-reduction work while longtime sustainability leader Ann Berwick prepares to depart after helping guide the transition.
   

• This Terrier Spent the Summer Interning in a Golf Ball Plant (bu.edu subscription) — A Boston University engineering student from Newton, Mass., spent his summer designing advanced manufacturing machinery for Titleist's golf ball plant in New Bedford. He describes how hands-on skills from BU classes, plus his Newton upbringing and love of tinkering with cars, translated into real-world engineering work and even sparked a new passion for golf and sports technology careers.
