North Shore Coffee Shop With Inspired Mission To Close After 9 Years
Breaking Grounds Cafe of Peabody acted as a training and employment opportunity for those with autism and other disabilities.
PEABODY, MA — Breaking Ground Cafe — the downtown Peabody coffee shop that served as a hospitality training and employment opportunity for local residents with autism and other disabilities for the past nine years — is set to close at the end of July.
Northeast Arc, which operated the shop at 67 Main Street, said on Tuesday that rising costs and the "uncertain state and federal funding landscape" are primary factors in the closure.
"This was not an easy choice," Northeast Arc said in a statement. "But it is the right move for the financial health of our organization."

Northeast Arc said Breaking Grounds employees will have the opportunity to apply for other positions within the nonprofit organization.
"We are so thankful to all of the incredible employees and participants who have contributed to making Breaking Grounds such a vibrant and welcoming place for many years.
"We are grateful for the continued partnership and support of the city of Peabody."
Breaking Grounds was closed for three months because of fire damage in 2023 before reopening with new floors, ceiling, furniture paint, as well as uplifting and empowering stencils and designs on the tables and counters.
