📰 News we're reading

• Massachusetts high court blocks city from displaying Catholic saint statues honoring first responders (foxbangor.com) — Quincy's plan to install two large Catholic saint statues outside its new public safety headquarters is on hold after Massachusetts' highest court said the display could appear to endorse one religion. The city, backed by a religious liberty group, vows to keep fighting, while civil liberties organizations and Quincy taxpayers argue the statues would violate state constitutional rules on religious neutrality.

• Jean E. Dougherty, 68 (thequincysun.com) — Quincy is mourning Jean E. Dougherty, 68, a Quincy native and Quincy High School graduate remembered for her humor, warmth, and love of animals. After a career in reinsurance and years living out of state, she returned home to Quincy, where family asks that any memorial donations support the Quincy Animal Shelter.

• Sustainable Aquaculture at the New England Aquarium (neaq.org) — Quincy plays a quiet but crucial role in the New England Aquarium's sustainable aquaculture program, with its Animal Care Center hatching and raising many of the fish visitors see in Boston and abroad. Local aquarists in Quincy rear species from egg to adult, reducing pressure on wild reefs while sharing fish and research with partner aquariums worldwide.
