SALEM, MA — Essex County's annual Trails & Sails event series will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026, with free programs scheduled across all 34 cities and towns in the Essex National Heritage Area.

The series will run Sept. 12-27. Organizers said the milestone year will highlight the region's parks, waterways, historic sites and cultural institutions.

What began in 2002 as a celebration of the Essex National Heritage Area has grown into hundreds of events, according to the announcement. The free offerings include guided hikes, behind-the-scenes tours of historic and cultural sites, boat trips, cultural celebrations, and activities for families of all ages.

"For a quarter century, Trails & Sails has encouraged us to honor the land and sea around us, and to discover new sights in our own communities. As we celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary, this moment reminds us that the spirit of 1776 persists in the landscapes we see every day."

"We're thrilled to celebrate 25 years of Trails & Sails," said Annie Harris, CEO of Essex Heritage. "This anniversary is a tribute to the countless community partners, volunteers, and participants who have helped shape this program into a vibrant showcase of the places and stories that make Essex County unique.

"We're looking forward to making this year our most memorable yet."

Essex Heritage said more than 175,000 visitors have taken part in Trails & Sails since 2002, with stops ranging from Plum Island and Den Rock Park in Lawrence to historical sites from Saugus to Salem.

Many organizations have already committed to participating in 2026, including Phillips Library, North Shore Concert Band and the Merrimack Valley Bird Club.

A full schedule will be available on the Trails & Sails website in the coming weeks. Organizers said some events may require advance registration.

A printed guidebook is also set to be distributed in August.
