📰 News we're reading
• 'Depressing and scandalous': Lawmakers want Healey administration to explain lax nursing home oversight (bostonglobe.com) — A nursing home in Wakefield is among several facilities bought by an operator whose chain has drawn scrutiny for poor performance, prompting Massachusetts lawmakers to demand tougher oversight from the Healey administration. State officials now plan long-delayed regulations to better vet out-of-state nursing home buyers, as advocates push for stronger protections for vulnerable residents statewide.
• Eager to help Saugus Veterans (advocatenews.net) — Saugus has hired a full-time Veterans Service Officer, ending the prior arrangement where one part-time VSO was shared among Saugus, Wakefield, and Melrose. The new officer is expanding job resources, outreach meetings, and communication for veterans and families, which may influence how nearby communities like Wakefield think about organizing their own veterans' services and support networks.
