WAYLAND, MA — A fisherman reported finding a submerged vehicle in Lake Cochituate on Saturday, prompting a response from Wayland police and mutual aid partners.

The fisherman reported the discovery at 4:32 p.m. Saturday. A Massachusetts State Police Dive Team responded to examine the vehicle and determined it was an unoccupied Nissan Frontier with Maryland plates, according to Acting Wayland Police Chief Mark Hebert.

"The vehicle has no apparent connection to anyone in Massachusetts, so far," Acting ChiefHebert said. "The Massachusetts State Police will be taking over the investigation, since the vehicle was found on state property."

Lake Cochituate is part of Cochituate State Park in Natick and Wayland.

Police said it is not yet known how long the vehicle was submerged or whether it was occupied when it entered the water.

The investigation is ongoing. Town officials said further inquiries should be directed to Massachusetts State Police.
