New Ramp To Open At Westborough, Hopkinton Interchange
A new ramp will open next month at the I-495/I-90 interchange as crews prepare for another traffic shift in the construction zone.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — A new ramp will open next month at the I-495/I-90 interchange as crews prepare for another traffic shift in the construction zone.
The new I-90 eastbound on-ramp from I-495 southbound, Exit 58, is scheduled to open Thursday, July 9, according to MassDOT. Temporary lane closures will be in place on I-495 northbound and southbound between Exits 58 and 59 from 8 p.m. July 8, until 5 a.m. July 9, while crews complete the shift.
By the morning of July 9, the new traffic pattern is expected to be in place. If weather delays the work, the same temporary lane closures will take place overnight on July 10, and the ramp will open on July 11, according to MassDOT.

The I-495 northbound lane split near the work zone will also be removed during the shift. Traffic that had been split around the construction area will return to its normal alignment, MassDOT said.
Drivers should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution while traveling through the work area. MassDOT said signage, law enforcement details and messaging will be in place to guide drivers.

What The Interchange Project Includes
Patch reported in December that MassDOT had created a northbound I-495 lane split between Exits 58 and 59 as part of the interchange project. At the time, the agency said the pattern would remain in place through spring 2026.
The latest ramp opening follows another recent milestone at the interchange. A new ramp connecting I-90 westbound to I-495 southbound opened in May, giving westbound Mass Pike drivers separate exits for I-495 south and I-495 north.
The work is part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project in Hopkinton and Westborough. The project is meant to provide a safer and more efficient interchange, replace the existing interchange, eliminate the former toll booth area and weaving areas, improve ramp spacing and acceleration and deceleration lanes and add an auxiliary lane from I-495 northbound to Route 9, according to MassDOT.
New bridges are also being built on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 northbound over Flanders Road and on Fruit Street, according to MassDOT.
MassDOT says construction is ongoing and the project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
