WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough is expected to receive funding for its library, according to state officials.

The town will get $12,500 in state funding for the Westborough Public Library, Sen. Michael Moore (D-2nd Worcester) announced in a social media post on Wednesday. The legislator said the funding comes from a legislative earmark included in the state budget supported by revenue from the Fair Share Amendment.

"So excited to share that Westborough Public Library will soon receive $12,500 thanks to my earmark in the recent Fair Share Amendment budget," he wrote in the announcement.

The funding comes from the state’s “Fair Share” surtax, approved by voters in 2022, which adds an additional tax on annual income over $1 million. It's also known as the "millionaires tax."

Revenue generated by the Fair Share Amendment is placed into a state fund dedicated to public education and transportation and distributed through the annual budget process rather than as direct payments to individual communities.

That means local districts like Westborough can receive targeted investments when lawmakers include project-specific allocations in the state budget or direct funding through eligible programs.

This comes just one day after Sen. Moore announced Westborough would get $115,000 in state funding, also from an earmark included in the Fair Share Amendment. The funding will go toward a traffic study of Route 9 and the upgrade of roadway signage, the legislator said.

The Westborough Public Library's repair project is still in a full construction phase, with major upgrades, including new HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, electrical systems, and structural repairs as walls and interior spaces are being rebuilt and reshaped

It seems the project is targeting a Fall 2026 reopening, and for now, the library is located at its temporary site at 1500 Union St. in the Bay State Commons.
