Tribute to Educators Shaping the Future

HSS Azad Shakha recently celebrated Guru Vandana, on 7th June 2026, a special program dedicated to honouring teachers and mentors for their guidance, dedication, and contributions to students' lives. In Hindu culture, the word Guru refers to a teacher, spiritual guide, or mentor, while Vandana means salutation or reverence. Guru Vandana is an ancient Indian tradition that expresses gratitude, respect, and appreciation for those who impart knowledge and values. Teachers hold a highly respected place in society because they not only educate students but also help shape their character and future.

This reverence is reflected in the well-known Sanskrit shloka, “Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwarah; Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah,” which recognizes the guru as a source of wisdom, guidance, and enlightenment.

The celebration began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, considered an auspicious way to commence special occasions in Hindu tradition. Students then performed Guru Puja, applying tilak to their teachers, offering flowers, and expressing their gratitude through traditional gestures of respect. Students also sought their teachers' blessings by touching their feet, a long-standing Indian custom that symbolizes humility and reverence toward elders and mentors.

The event brought together teachers, students, parents, and community members for an afternoon filled with gratitude, learning, and celebration. The program included prayers and introductory remarks highlighting the significance of Guru Vandana and the important role teachers play in shaping individuals and society. Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to reflect on the positive influence educators have on young minds.

Students showcased their talents through a variety of cultural performances, including traditional dances and piano recitals. Their performances demonstrated not only their hard work and creativity but also the encouragement and support they receive from their teachers. One of the highlights of the program was an interactive games session involving teachers, which created a fun and energetic atmosphere and allowed everyone to participate in the celebration.

Several kids shared heartfelt messages expressing their appreciation for their teachers. They spoke about lessons they had learned both inside and outside the classroom and described how their teachers had inspired them to work hard, stay disciplined, and pursue their goals. These personal reflections made the event especially meaningful and reminded everyone of the lasting impact teachers have on their students.

During their addresses, teachers emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, discipline, humility, and respect for parents, teachers, and society. They encouraged students to continue striving for excellence while remaining grounded in values and culture. The program also highlighted the Hindu principle of “Acharya Devo Bhava,” meaning “Regard the teacher as divine,” which reminds us to appreciate and respect those who guide us on the path of knowledge.

The Guru Vandana celebration was a memorable event that strengthened the bond between students and teachers while reinforcing the values of gratitude, respect, and lifelong learning. As the program concluded, participants left with a deeper appreciation for the role of teachers and a renewed commitment to applying the lessons and values they have learned in their daily lives.
