Second Worcester Pizza Spot Gets High Marks From Dave Portnoy

Portnoy's latest Worcester pizza stop brought him to Pepe's Italian Restaurant on Shrewsbury Street.

WORCESTER, MA — Just one day after Dave Portnoy dished out a 7.5 rating to Newton Square Pizza in Worcester, he's visiting another pizza shop in the city.

Portnoy’s latest Worcester pizza stop brought him to Pepe’s Italian Restaurant at 179 Shrewsbury St. The Barstool Sports founder behind the “One Bite” pizza review series gave Pepe’s a 7.2 rating after trying a plain cheese pizza, saying the pizza was good but needed “a little more sauce.”

Portnoy also spoke with owner Thomsina Travaglio, whom he praised after she waved to his dogs during the visit.“Very cool in there, exposed brick,” Portnoy said of the restaurant.

Portnoy said Travaglio recommended the four-cheese and margherita pizzas, but he reviewed a straight cheese pizza.

“My only complaint, a little more sauce,” Portnoy said. “She did say get the four cheeses, get the margherita, this is straight cheese. It’s good.”

At the end of the review, Travaglio gave Portnoy homemade bread, which drew some of his strongest praise.

“I wasn’t gonna add this as a review, but the bread is better than the pizza,” Portnoy said, calling the bread “spectacular.”

The review came after Portnoy visited Newton Square Pizza during a celebrity-filled weekend in Worcester for Drake Maye’s celebrity softball event at Polar Park. Portnoy gave Newton Square Pizza a 7.5 rating.
