UMass Memorial Health Names New Chief Financial Officer

WORCESTER, MA — A major Worcester hospital system has named its next chief financial officer.

UMass Memorial Health has named veteran health care finance executive Jeff Biesczat as its next chief financial officer. Biesczat joined in early September and will succeed Sergio Melgar, who plans to retire in January 2027, the hospital system announced Wednesday.

UMass Memorial Health is Central Massachusetts’ largest nonprofit health care system, with more than 20,000 caregivers and 2,400 physicians. Its network includes UMass Memorial Medical Center, Harrington Hospital, HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, Milford Regional Medical Center and UMass Memorial Medical Group.

Biesczat will oversee the system’s financial strategy and operations, report directly to President and CEO Dr. Eric Dickson and serve on the executive leadership team.

He has more than 25 years of financial leadership experience. He most recently served as system senior vice president of finance and accounting at Endeavor Health, an integrated health system serving the Chicago metropolitan area.

During his 14 years at Endeavor Health, Biesczat helped implement an enterprise resource planning platform designed to standardize financial reporting, planning and decision-making. He also helped reorganize the system’s finance operations.

“Jeff is a highly respected healthcare finance executive whose experience leading large, complex health systems will be invaluable as we continue to advance our mission and strengthen our organization for the future,” Dickson said in a statement.

Melgar has served as UMass Memorial Health’s CFO for 12 years. The health system credited him with strengthening its financial foundation and supporting its growth and transformation.
