Worcester Public Schools Shares Meals, Learning Options For Students During Summer

The school district is pointing families to several summer programs and learning resources available during the summer break.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester Public Schools is pointing families to several summer programs and learning resources available during the summer break.

The district highlighted free meals, required summer reading, math activities, and school, district, and community programs for students.

Summer Eats Program

The Summer Eats program, sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the WPS Nutrition Department, offers free meals to children and teens 18 and under at sites around Worcester. No identification or registration is required.

Summer Eats runs from June 23 to Aug. 15. The district said about 1,100 children eat meals through the Worcester program.

Summer Reading

Students entering grades 7 through 12 also have required summer reading by grade.

Titles include "Brown Girl Dreaming" for grade 7, "Inside Out and Back Again" for grade 8, "Everything, Everything" for grade 9, "Solo" for grade 10, "Before We Were Free" for grade 11 and "Born a Crime" for grade 12.

Math Calendars, Other Programs

The district is also offering summer math calendars and a list of in-person summer programs, including Summer Acceleration Academy, Civics Camp, Credit Recovery, Special Education Extended School Year and Worcester UNITES.

Some programs may already be full or underway, according to WPS.
