3 MI Planned Parenthood Locations Closing After Federal Aid Cuts

Planned Parenthood of Michigan is permanently closing three locations after the organization says it was declined federal funding and reimbursements for patient care.

The organization said it was rejected $4.2 million in patient care reimbursement and federal family planning funding in the next fiscal year, permanently affecting locations in Lansing, Livonia and Warren.

It was unclear exactly when the health centers would close. Planned Parenthood leaders primarily blamed federal cuts to Medicaid.

"Republicans in Congress have now demonstrated that they are willing to block Medicaid reimbursement for Planned Parenthood patients, and the Trump administration has proposed eliminating the Title X family planning program altogether," Planned Parenthood of Michigan President and CEO Paula Thornton Greear said in a statement. "We cannot build the future of patient care on federal funding that can be stripped away whenever political power changes hands."

The organization can bill Medicaid again, but its leaders noted it will not be enough to recover a year of lost revenue. They also said it does not provide a safeguard to ongoing threats to the safety-net health care funding.

Instead, Planned Parenthood of Michigan plans to work with counties and other state partners to build a funding foundation to avoid future cuts from federal politics.

"We have to reshape how we deliver care so Planned Parenthood of Michigan can continue serving patients for generations to come," Greear said. "That means concentrating our resources at regional access points and procedural sites and continuing to expand virtual care across Michigan."

Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chair David T. Woodward announced allocating up to $1.5 million to help keep the Planned Parenthood clinic in Ferndale open through at least August 2028.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan is directly notifying patients affected by the three site closures and connecting them with continued care across its remaining health centers and expanded virtual care network.

The organization noted the Detroit and Ferndale health centers are within roughly 20 miles of the closing Livonia and Warren locations, and many services provided at the Lansing health center are available through PPMI's virtual care network.

The three closing locations did not perform procedural abortion care. They did, however, provide medication abortions, birth control, pregnancy testing and tests and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

In May, Planned Parenthood of Michigan asked Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for $5 million in taxpayer money, but she said that responsibility falls on the legislature. The request went nowhere.

Whitmer on Thursday blamed Republicans in Washington D.C. and the GOP’s Big Beautiful Bill Act for the closures.

"Planned Parenthood provides critical care, like cancer screenings, routine checkups, menopause treatment, and more, which are all at risk due to the D.C. Republicans’ cuts," she said. "Republicans in Washington should be ashamed of themselves for putting women’s lives at risk."

Right to Life of Michigan called the closures "shameful political theater."

"If Planned Parenthood is facing closures, they should be pointing to mismanagement of their own national organization, not the government," Right to Life of Michigan President Amber Roseboom said.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan closed health centers in Jackson, Petoskey and Marquette and consolidated two in Ann Arbor last year.
