• Mecosta County declares local state of emergency as rivers flood homes, roads (ourmidland.com) — Flooding on the Muskegon River and Mitchell Creek has pushed Mecosta County into a local state of emergency, with high, fast-moving water already affecting parks and homes in Big Rapids. Officials warn conditions may worsen, urge evacuations in impacted areas, and advise residents not to drive through flooded roads while damage assessments and emergency alerts continue over the next week.
   

• Mecosta County K-9 team builds trust through training (bigrapidsnews.com) — A Mecosta County Sheriff’s K-9 team based in Big Rapids is sharpening its skills through constant training that Deputy Zachary Noble says builds life-saving trust with his dog, Lux. Recently sworn in, Lux is already helping deter crime, recover narcotics, and track missing people, while also giving deputies a new way to connect with residents who love dogs.
   

• Ferris State's Jim Crow Museum wins state award for community-driven collection move (ferris.edu) — Ferris State University’s Jim Crow Museum in Big Rapids has earned a statewide award for a volunteer-powered effort to move its 30,000-piece collection into a new facility at the campus’s State Street entrance. The expanded museum, set to open in fall 2026, will feature interactive exhibits, research space, and more room for school and community groups to explore the history of racial injustice.
