📰 News we're reading

1. Clawson project puts 70-plus majestic trees on chopping block (freep.com subscription) — Clawson residents on Dreon Drive and nearby streets are grappling with plans to remove more than 70 mature street trees as part of a $64.5 million voter-approved infrastructure overhaul of water lines and roads. After pushback, city officials agreed to cut only trees needed for this fall's water main work while reassessing additional removals, raising questions about transparency, safety, and future tree protections.

2. Photo gallery of the L'Anse Creuse at Clawson boys soccer match (theoaklandpress.com) — Clawson High's boys soccer team fell 5-1 at home to L'Anse Creuse in a Macomb Area Conference Gold Division matchup that clinched the league title for the visiting Lancers. A large photo gallery captures key moments, including goals, battles for possession, and Clawson players' efforts throughout the decisive late-season game.

3. Want to win a James Beard Award? Here's the first step (detroitnews.com) — Clawson readers are reminded that local sushi chef Hajime Sato of Sozai brought the city its first-ever James Beard Award in 2024 before closing the restaurant and moving away. With 2027 James Beard submissions now open, the piece explains how anyone can nominate standout chefs, restaurants, or food leaders and notes other recent Michigan winners.

4. South Lyon is the latest local community to cover its Flock cameras (audacy.com) — Clawson is among several Metro Detroit communities that have already ended their contracts with Flock Safety license plate cameras, as South Lyon now moves to cover its devices amid privacy concerns. State lawmakers are considering new rules to restrict how Flock data can be used, including penalties for improper access or sharing, which could shape future surveillance practices in Clawson and nearby cities.
