2-Year-Old Shot, Injured By Unsecured Gun Inside Detroit Home: Police
No arrests were immediately made in connection with the shooting, police said.
DETROIT — A child was shot and injured with an unsecured gun inside a Detroit home Tuesday, according to police.
The incident happened at 8 a.m. at a home in the 12900 block of Evergreen Road near Interstate 96, according to police.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters the mother was cooking breakfast inside the home when she heard a loud popping sound and discovered her 2-year-old was shot.

Bettison said it was unclear if it was the 2-year-old who fired the gun or someone else in the home.
Police did not immediately arrest anyone in connection with the shooting, but Bettison reiterated parents are responsible for safely securing their weapons or they could face charges under Michigan's safe storage law.
"The message to parents is to secure your firearms," Bettison said. "Whether it's a gun lock, a gun safe, it is your responsibility to secure your weapons. And if you don't, you'll be held accountable."
