Small Earthquake Shakes Parts Of Metro Detroit

A small earthquake rattled parts of southeastern Michigan on Sunday morning.

The 2.9-magnitude earthquake hit at 10:30 a.m. Sunday just a few miles off the coast of Amherstburg, Ontario, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Multiple downriver communities, including Trenton, Rockwood, Grosse Isle and Wyandotte felt the quake, according to survey responses via the USGS "Did you feel it" tool.

Amherstburg sits roughly 16 miles south of Detroit at the mouth of the Detroit River.

Although rare, earthquakes do strike the Great Lakes region. The last earthquake before Sunday to rattle southeast Michigan was in December 2023, when a 2.4-magnitude earthquake hit parts of St. Clair County.

No injuries or significant damage has been reported.
