Road officials said one lane in each direction will remain open during the construction. Additionally, access to homes and businesses will be maintained.

The second phase of the project will be between Haggerty and Drake roads. That work is expected to start in spring 2027. Additional details about the 2027 construction plans will be announced at a later date.

The overall project includes:

  • Patching concrete on sections of 12 Mile Road from Novi Road to west of M-5.
  • Milling (grinding off existing pavement) and repaving 12 Mile Road with asphalt from west of M-5 to Farmington Road.
  • Repairing curbs and gutters where needed.
  • Installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant crosswalks and pedestrian-crosswalk signals with push buttons.
  • Upgrading SMART bus stops.
  • Installing pedestrian-crossing signals at the White Plains Drive pedestrian crossing on 12 Mile Road.
  • Relocating utilities (will occur during the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons with lane closures).

The major road carries between 28,000 and 30,000 vehicles daily between Farmington Road and Novi roads, officials said.

The contractor for the project is Cadillac Asphalt of Farmington Hills.

The $12 million project will be paid with federal funds and contributions from RCOC, Farmington Hills, Novi and Oakland County (through the Tri-Party Program).
