• Man sentenced in drunk driving accident (mininggazette.com) — A man has been sentenced in Houghton County Circuit Court to 3 to 10 years in prison for a January 2025 drunk driving crash that seriously injured two people. Prosecutor Dan Helmer cited the driver’s high blood alcohol level and prior drunk-driving convictions in arguing against a plea deal. The defendant has been held in the Houghton County Jail and must serve at least three years before parole eligibility. 
• Portage Health Auxiliary opens spring grant cycle (keweenawreport.com) — Nonprofits serving Houghton County’s seniors and youth can soon apply for spring grants from the Portage Health Auxiliary, funded by sales at the Gilded Rose Gift Shop in Hancock. Applications open April 20 and close May 20, with awards expected in June for programs that clearly benefit residents in the four-county area.
• Copper Country Trail National Byway nominated for USAToday 10Best Readers' Choice award (keweenawreport.com) — Houghton-area drivers can take pride in the Copper Country Trail National Byway, which has been nominated for USA Today’s 10Best scenic byways list. The route, including the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and stretch from Houghton to Copper Harbor, showcases historic copper-mining towns and striking Keweenaw scenery. Residents can also go online to learn how to support the nomination.
