Beloved 18-Year-Old Camel Dies At Detroit Zoo

ROYAL OAK, MI — Suren, a beloved 18-year-old camel, was compassionately euthanized, zoo officials said last Friday.

Officials said Suren had been experiencing increasing discomfort and mobility challenges from osteoarthritis.

Her dedicated animal care and veterinary teams tried various treatments to help maintain her comfort and quality of life, including stem cell therapy and joint injections, zoo officials said.

Last Thursday, zookeepers observed that Suren was unable to stand.

Despite additional care, her condition did not improve. That's when zoo officials made the difficult decision to compassionately euthanize her.

"These decisions are never easy, but they are rooted in a deep commitment to an animal’s well-being and quality of life," zoo officials said. "Throughout her many years at the Detroit Zoo, Suren touched the hearts of staff, volunteers and guests with her easygoing and gentle nature."

Suren's care team said she was a smart and natural leader who was always quick to pick up on training. They also described her as an exceptional mother, whose legacy will live on through her daughter, Rusi.

Rusi will remain at the zoo, and the team has identified a compatible companion for Rusi.
