Oakland County OKs $1.5M For Planned Parenthood Clinic

Oakland County will help keep one of metro Detroit's last remaining Planned Parenthood clinics open.

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted Thursday in favor of allocating up to $1.5 million for the Ferndale clinic.

The funds will reimburse Planned Parenthood of Michigan for eligible in-person and telehealth services at the clinic.

Officials said the move will keep the clinic, which serves roughly 6,000 residents a year, open through at least 2028.

"We know that access to preventative healthcare is essential to protecting the health, safety and welfare of Oakland County residents," Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chair David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak) said. "The Trump administration continues to take steps to defund Planned Parenthood, and today we took steps to prevent that from happening here."

The vote comes just after three Planned Parenthood's closed across Michigan, including locations in Warren and Livonia, because of funding issues.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan President and CEO Paula Thornton Greear blamed Republicans in Congress for blocking Medicaid reimbursement to the clinics.
