📰 News we're reading

• Car crashes into Brooklyn Park care facility, forcing evacuation (kstp.com) — Residents at a Brooklyn Park congregate care facility were evacuated early Wednesday after a car crashed into a bedroom near 76th and Regent Avenues, causing a gas leak. Fire crews and CenterPoint Energy shut off the gas, one resident and the driver suffered minor injuries, and the driver was arrested as officials assess damage and repairs.

• Brooklyn Park Council Considers More Than Doubling Mayor's Salary (ccxmedia.org) — Brooklyn Park leaders are weighing a big jump in the mayor’s pay, from about $22,000 to $50,000 a year, with no change for council members until at least 2027. Supporters say the role demands far more than part-time hours and better compensation could attract more diverse future candidates, while the proposal still needs a second council vote.

• ConneQt offers youth solidarity not charity (longfellownokomismessenger.com) — Brooklyn Park residents are served by Avenues for Youth’s ConneQt program, which pairs LGBTQI+ young people with volunteer host families and support services. The long-running initiative, based in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park, helps 16- to 24-year-olds find stable housing, access education and employment resources, and receive affirming care. Organizers say they urgently need more local host families to meet growing demand.
