MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A repeat violent offender who carjacked an Uber driver and fired at him as he fled on foot was sentenced to more than 14 years in federal prison, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Cameron Davon Durand, 32, received a 170-month sentence from U.S. District Judge Donovan W. Frank on June 22 for two federal counts: possessing a firearm as a felon and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

He committed the offenses just one month into federal supervised release stemming from a 2019 conviction for felon in possession of a firearm, for which he had previously served 90 months in prison.

The sentence breaks down as 50 months for the felon-in-possession conviction, followed by a mandatory consecutive 120 months for discharging the firearm during the carjacking, totaling 170 months. The court also imposed 30 months for supervised-release violations, to run concurrently.

According to court documents, Durand's summer 2025 crime spree began in June, when officers found a loaded 9mm handgun with a red-dot sight in his vehicle.

Weeks later, he was captured on surveillance video firing a weapon outside a bar in a densely populated St. Paul neighborhood.

Then, on July 18, 2025, he brandished a firearm, carjacked an Uber driver, chased the victim on foot, and fired at him as the victim ran for his life before driving away in the stolen vehicle.

Durand fled responding officers at high speed, then abandoned the carjacked car and escaped on foot with a firearm in hand. Inside the victim's vehicle, officers found Durand's backpack containing multiple forms of his identification and 9mm ammunition.

A spent casing recovered at the carjacking scene matched the ammunition in the backpack.

Durand pleaded guilty on Dec. 17, 2025.

"This sentence ensures that a dangerous and escalating menace is no longer free to terrorize our communities," U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen said. "Durand has demonstrated, repeatedly and over nearly two decades, that no term of supervision, no prior prison sentence, and no tragic personal history will deter him from armed violence."

Saint Paul Police Chief Axel Henry said the sentencing "reflects the commitment of the Saint Paul Police Department, and our federal partners, to hold those who commit violent crimes accountable."

Durand's criminal history dates to 2007 and includes felony convictions involving firearms, assaults, robbery, and gang-related violence.

The case was investigated by the ATF, the Saint Paul Police Department, and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Bejar prosecuted the case.
