📰 News we're reading

1. Linden Hills staple Coffee and Tea Limited closing after 50 years (fox9.com) — Longtime Minneapolis coffee lovers are losing a landmark as Coffee and Tea Limited in Linden Hills closes at month's end after its lease wasn't renewed. The nearly 50‑year‑old shop, central to the Cone family's identity, will stop brewing in-store, though Jim's coffee will still be sold at Clancy's Meat Market in South Minneapolis while the family weighs its future.

2. Hopkins utility pole death: Xcel Energy says it never got complaints about pole that killed man (fox9.com) — After a utility pole fatally crushed a driver's car in Hopkins, Xcel Energy says the pole had passed inspection and drew no prior complaints. A Minneapolis attorney is urging state regulators to scrutinize Xcel's safety practices more aggressively, as investigators work to determine why the decades-old pole suddenly failed.

3. Man charged with double stabbing in Coon Rapids on the loose (kstp.com) — A New Brighton man is charged with attempting to kill two people in a Coon Rapids home, and he's still on the loose. Investigators say he'd recently been staying with friends in Minneapolis, and the victim's abandoned SUV was later found in the city, so Minneapolis residents should stay alert while police continue searching for him.

4. Minnesota politics still has a front porch, and it's at the State Fair (kdhnews.com) — Minnesotans, including a retired pipefitter from Minneapolis, are pressing top candidates about fraud, Trump-era immigration crackdowns, and state spending as they mingle at the State Fair. The fair has become a de facto town hall where Minneapolis residents see leaders like Amy Klobuchar, Lisa Demuth, Tim Walz, and Peggy Flanagan up close, sharing food, feedback, and campaign messages ahead of a competitive statewide election season.

5. Halloween costume with 'minstrel show features' puts Target in hot seat — again (wavepublication.com) — Target, the Minneapolis-based retail giant, has pulled a children's Halloween costume after critics said it echoed racist minstrel imagery, prompting another wave of backlash. Minneapolis boycott organizers say the incident reinforces their push for the company to restore its diversity and equity commitments, even as Target's sales and stock price have recently rebounded.
