📰 News we're reading

1. Downtown feels like a maze. The City of Rochester is trying to help pedestrians navigate it (postbulletin.com) — Downtown Rochester is currently a maze of detours, tunnels, and closures as Mayo Clinic's massive campus overhaul reshapes streets and sidewalks, so the city has rolled out new "Detours Lead to Discovery" wayfinding signs and an interactive map to guide people around. The system is updated frequently to reflect shifting construction, aiming to keep pedestrians moving and support struggling downtown businesses that depend on foot traffic.

2. Spring Valley Woman Hurt in Collision with Pickup Near Rochester Shopping Complex (krocnews.com) — A Spring Valley woman was injured in a two-vehicle crash near the Shoppes on Maine retail complex in southeast Rochester, at St. Bridget Road and 48th Street SE. She was taken to St. Mary's with non-life-threatening injuries, while the Wabasha pickup driver was unhurt. Rochester police, fire, and the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office all responded.

3. Olmsted County health model wins national award, goes statewide (kimt.com) — Olmsted County Public Health's data-sharing model, built with help from Mayo Clinic's Rochester Epidemiology Project, is giving local officials sharper tools to track mental health, substance use, and other trends. After winning a national award, the approach is now being funded statewide, meaning Rochester-area residents could benefit from earlier detection of issues like overdoses and suicide risk across southeastern Minnesota.

4. Boys soccer results for Monday, Aug. 31, 2026 (postbulletin.com) — Century High School's boys soccer team delivered a dominant win in Rochester, with Finn Eckerman scoring four goals and Carson Niven adding three more in an 8–1 Section 1, Class 3A victory over Farmington. The lopsided result, backed by solid goalkeeping from Aidan Brown, gives local fans an early-season look at a potent Panthers offense.

5. Could Letrozole, a Breast Cancer Drug, Help Treat Uterine Fibroids? (blackdoctor.com) — Women in the Rochester area dealing with painful uterine fibroids may soon have another treatment option under study, as Mayo Clinic in Rochester is a site for the PLUM trial testing the breast cancer drug letrozole. The multi-year study, led by UCSF, is enrolling eligible women to see whether this medication can safely ease fibroid symptoms and reduce the need for invasive procedures.
