Deputies located the man on the roof of the abandoned building on the TCAAP site, according to the fire department.
Because the building's stairs were not usable for a rescue, a sergeant requested a helicopter from the Minnesota Air Rescue Team.
Firefighters helped deputies with patient care and began preparing the man for removal from the roof, according to the fire department.
A firetruck ladder was able to reach the roof, where the man was placed in a stokes basket and lowered to the ground, the release states. The helicopter request was canceled.
Allina paramedics and two firefighters transported the man to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He was taken into surgery but died from his injuries.
Investigators later learned the man was holding a mortar tube with a 2-inch firework when it exploded in front of a group of 15 to 20 people.
"Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this young man," the fire department said in the release.
The death is the fourth fireworks related fatality in Minnesota since 2021, according to the Star Tribune, which cited the state Fire Marshal's office.
Previous deaths included a 13 year old from Naytahwaush in 2025, an 18 year old from Brooklyn Park in 2022 and a 47 year old from Apple Valley in 2021.
