📰 News we're reading

1. Inside the Private Deal Between Amazon and Ridgeland's Water System (mississippifreepress.org) — Residents in Jackson should know that wastewater from Amazon's new Ridgeland data center will be piped to Jackson's already fragile sewer system, raising concerns about overflows, service disruptions, and future costs. The private agreement allows Amazon large water withdrawals and wastewater discharges with limited reporting, while Jackson receives no dedicated funds for infrastructure upgrades despite handling up to 1.84 million gallons of wastewater daily.

2. Jackson elementary school receives thousands of new books (wapt.com) — Students at Shirley Elementary in Jackson are getting a huge literacy boost, with more than 18,000 new books and a full library makeover after Jackson Public Schools won Scholastic's 2026 Richard M. Robinson Literacy Champion Award. The district plans to use the high-quality, age-appropriate books in classrooms, take-home packs, and reading libraries to deepen a culture of reading citywide.

3. Jackson NAACP tackles flooding, insurance costs, housing (wapt.com) — Jackson residents and neighborhood leaders just met at St. Philip's Episcopal Church for a ReBUILDing Jackson workshop on flooding, drainage, and aging infrastructure, with special focus on Wards 1 and 2. Hosted by the Jackson NAACP and Jackson Association of Neighborhoods, the event linked infrastructure problems to insurance costs, housing stability, and household budgets, while urging better access to assistance for families citywide.

4. Jackson advocate stranded for hours by broken Greyhound wheelchair lift (wapt.com) — A Jackson disability advocate says he was stranded for hours at the Jackson bus station when two Greyhound buses arrived with malfunctioning wheelchair lifts during a trip to and from Alabama. He describes anxiety about missing his speaking commitment and frustration that an inaccessible bus was still in service, highlighting ongoing barriers for riders with disabilities who rely on intercity buses.
