1. Love Your Block reaches new Columbia neighborhoods in second year (kbia.org) — Columbia’s Love Your Block program is funding 10 neighborhood projects this year, including a cleanup in Hanover backed by local group ForColumbia. Organizers are steering grants toward areas outside the central city that need extra support, with resident-led boards choosing winners. While national funding ends next year, organizers hope the city will keep the effort going.

2. Man arrested after hours-long standoff in Columbia neighborhood just south of I-70 (abc17news.com) — Police arrested a 58-year-old man Thursday evening after a roughly four-hour standoff in a Columbia neighborhood just south of I-70 on Parkade Boulevard. Officers say he barricaded himself in a home and allegedly made threats while believed to be armed before surrendering. Police cleared the scene before 8:20 p.m., and more details are expected.

3. Columbia voters could decide on 1% sales tax for police and fire funding in August (komu.com) — Columbia leaders are considering a new 1% citywide sales tax dedicated to police and fire services, which could go before voters in August 2026. The tax would raise about $38 million annually for more officers and firefighters, new stations and facilities, equipment, technology, and shoring up the underfunded police and firefighter pension system. City officials say it would also help maintain competitive wages for Columbia’s public safety staff.

4. MU Program Empowers Women in Land Stewardship (missouriagconnection.com) — Women landowners in and around Columbia can join a free, daylong regenerative agriculture workshop at MU on May 5, part of a multi-state Women Landowners Leading Regeneration series. The Columbia session will connect women who own farmland with conservation experts, peer learning circles, and practical tools like cover crops, reduced tillage, and cost-share programs. Follow-up virtual meetings will keep the network going into 2027.
