• Independence police detain armed man at Blue Springs elementary school (kansascity.com) — Independence police quickly detained an armed man in the office of Sunny Pointe Elementary in Blue Springs Thursday morning, and no injuries or threats were reported. Officers responded after a passerby saw the man enter with a gun during a domestic dispute call, briefly rerouting some students before classes continued as normal.
   

• Independence Councilmember-elect talks future of city's historic sites (kctv5.com) — Independence’s historic landmarks like Vaile Mansion and Bingham-Waggoner Estate face an uncertain future after voters rejected $12 million in GO Bond funding last year. A new master plan suggests possible property sales, but councilmember-elect Cody Atkinson wants to keep city ownership and explore another bond and educational partnerships, urging residents to share their ideas before any decisions later this year.
   

• Union says striking KC-area ammunition plant workers ‘dug in for the long haul' (kansascity.com) — More than 1,300 workers at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence remain on strike, saying Olin Winchester won’t budge on wages, sick leave, or mandatory overtime. Union leaders call the facility vital to U.S. ammunition supplies and say national union resources are now focused on backing local members for what could be a prolonged fight.
