American Prospects and Landscape Photography, 1839 to Today presents 80 works that explore our ever-changing relationship with the natural world. Color photographs from Joel Sternfeld’s influential series American Prospects, a classic record of 1980s America, serve as the focal point for this exhibition, which considers the rich and varied history of landscape photography from the medium’s invention to the present.
Produced between 1978 and 1983 and published in 1987 as American Prospects, Sternfeld’s photographs set a new standard for color photography. Using an 8 x 10 -inch camera, Sternfeld pictured the American landscape with humor, compassion, and an eye for serendipitous encounters. His photographs balance an appreciation for natural splendor, seasonal change, and wide-open spaces with the evidence of environmental destruction, industrial decline, and suburban encroachment.
Select works by key landscape photographers, past and present, situate Sternfeld’s vision of America in a broader historical context. Included are photographs by Carleton Watkins, William Henry Jackson, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, William Eggleston, Robert Adams, Emmet Gowin, David Maisel, Mitch Epstein, Lauren Greenfield, Victoria Sambunaris, Barbara Bosworth, and David Taylor, among others.
This exhibition marks the first time that Sternfeld’s photographs, given to the museum as a gift of Peggy and Bill Lyons, will be on view at the Nelson-Atkins.
DATE & TIME

Earl Sweatshirt is the virtuosic byproduct of Los Angeles’ fertile ground where hip hop sowed its seeds and historic cultural movements were born. The prodigiously-gifted writer, lyricist and producer grew from a zeitgeist of which contemporary collectives in hip hop today are predicated. And while most movements are fleeting as soon as they arrive, Earl pushed forward, documented his growth and self-discovery on record and cemented himself as one of the foremost culturally relevant MC’s in the game, one who never strayed away too far from his Los Angeles beat-scene roots. His debut album Doris arrived in 2013 and introduced the world to a more realized vision from him than his seminal mixtape Earl that was released three years prior when he was just 16-years-old. He followed Doris with the critically-lauded I Don't Like Sh***t, I Don't Go Outside in 2015, further exploring the depth of his technical dexterity with more swagger than prior releases. Three years later, he released Some Rap Songs in 2018, the tightly wrought album that found a more self-aware and mature Earl in his reflection of being in the public eye since a teenager, coupled with the reconciling of the death of his father. Enter Feet of Clay, the conceptual 2019 project that continues the written narrative of Earl’s life in today’s societal landscape and world-view in real-time. Fast forward to 2022; Earl returned to the scene with critically acclaimed, SICK!

Brand new Swedish quartet thrown, fronted by ex-Grieved vocalist Marcus Lundqvist, drop their misanthropic debut single 'grayout', streaming now via Arising Empire.
Presenting lyrics filled with anger and self-hatred, the 4-piece effectively blends intense and crushing guitars with catchy yet aggressive vocal rythms. Without warning thrown aims to become prominent with their modern take on heavy music. With 'grayout' being the first step on making a new impression on the scene including the works of producer Buster Odeholm (who is also the drummer of the band) and music video director Lucas Englund (Parkway Drive, Architects) thrown brings their A to the game from day one and we're all here for it. Vocalist Marcus Lundqvist is joined by Johan Liljeblad and Andreas Malm on guitars, and drummer Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta/Humanity's Last Breath) as thrown aim to spread their message of self-loathing through their mix of gut-punching metalcore and anger-inciting hardcore. After two studio albums and nearly seven years as a band, Free Throw is making a significant change to their identity. The group — who has sung openly of personal struggles related to substance abuse and body image — is holding nothing back on What’s Past is Prologue, their third full length record, due out March 29, 2019 on Triple Crown Records.
Past releases may have provided small glimpses into Free Throw’s history as a band and personal lives outside of music, but What’s Past is Prologue is the group at their most forthcoming. The 12 tracks contained on the album detail the continuing mental health struggles of lead singer Cory Castro, and serve as a complete story of what happens when you decide that everything in your life needs to change.
“This album is very much about me hitting rock bottom from a mental health standpoint and the process I took in building myself back up,” Castro explained. “With the last record, I was trying to talk about my mental health, but at the time I was actually going through it. The last album felt like I was yelling from the void. This time I’m looking back into the void and I’m able to understand what was going on.”
The beautiful anguish that often comes with personal growth and an unexpected reckoning of self is palpable from the album’s outset. Beginning with “Smokes, Let’s Go” — a track of transition that features surprisingly delicate vocals and simple strings switches to impassioned shouts and furious instrumentals — Free Throw lead us out of the darkness and into the light.
As Castro explains, the record is split into two parts. The first half of What’s Past is Prologue explores the weight of personal blame, with singles — including the gunning and practically unstoppable “Tail Whip, Struggle” and the limitless, swaying tenderness of “Stay Out Of The Basement” — setting the stage for an impactful finale. As the album nears its conclusion, “Today Is Especially Delicious” provides a tumultuous turning point, with the band tearing through Castro’s shouted confession of “Is this what I had planned for my life/I need a hand of some type to pull me up and break this cycle of drinking for breakfast.”
That frank sincerity propels the album forward, and serves as a catalyst of change for the band. As a group, Free Throw has consistently turned their darkest days into moments that fans can sing and dance-along to, and for the first time, the band has arrived at this place where it’s all coming together, and maybe this is really only just the beginning. “This is the first Free Throw record with a happy ending,” Castro said. “The album leads to an ending of where the band stands today. We’re all happy to be doing what we’re doing, and it’s kind of the happy moment where we’ve become the band we were always meant to be.”

Here in 2026, Dogstar is clearly All In Now. After 20 years of silence as a band, this California-based power trio – guitarist and lead singer Bret Domrose, drummer Robert Mailhouse, and bassist Keanu Reeves – surprised many and perhaps even themselves when they returned in fine form in 2023. Only a few years later, Dogstar is returning with its 4th studio album full of strong new songs that leave no doubt they’re back for good with a powerful sound that is bigger and better than ever before. “Our last album was our ticket into a party,” says Bret Domrose. “And now we’ve shown up to the party.” Dogstar is a group of three friends who have slowly yet surely become a band of brothers who are excited to get back on the road this summer, including a 25-date “All In Now” North American Tour. As Reeves says, “For me, the attitude was like, ‘Let's work hard and let’s GO.’” All In Now is the most vivid reflection of the passion and chemistry that has been driving Dogstar’s heartfelt rock & roll dreams from the start. For Mailhouse, “The whole album may not hit quite as hard as the title track, but it really sets up the energy at the heart of this album.” Dogstar credits producer Nick Launay – whose long track record includes everyone from Midnight Oil to Nick Cave to Amyl and the Sniffers – with bringing a new sense of energy to All In Now. On record and onstage, prepare to have Dogstar turn your head around in a new way with All In Now.View Tickets & More Info
