1. Springfield Public Schools holds ribbon-cuttings for two new middle schools (ky3.com) — Springfield Public Schools just opened brand-new Pipkin Middle School on West Lynn and a rebuilt Reed Academy on North Lyon, both funded by the Prop S bond issue. The modern buildings replace aging facilities and signal more upgrades ahead, with new Pershing Middle School and a replacement Bingham Elementary already under construction for Springfield students and families.
   

2. Third suspect charged in Battlefield armed robbery and shooting (ozarksfirst.com) — Greene County prosecutors in Springfield have charged a third suspect, 21-year-old Lakareon Lang, in a New Year's Day armed robbery and shooting at a Battlefield home that seriously injured a woman and a juvenile. Investigators say Lang helped plan the robbery and drove two masked suspects, while one accomplice has already pleaded guilty and the others await key court dates this fall.
   

3. 'Not to forget you'; the cloistered world that disappeared from Springfield (ozarksfirst.com) — A once-hidden Carmelite monastery on Springfield's outskirts quietly shaped local Catholic life for decades before closing around 2010. This look back traces how a small group of cloistered nuns prayed, worked, and slowly dwindled in number as Springfield grew around them, with their former home now serving vulnerable women and children through Catholic Charities.
   

4. Inches from disaster: How a MoDOT 'crash cushion' impacted I-44 Doolittle crash (ky3.com) — Springfield-based MoDOT crews rely on truck-mounted crash cushions that likely prevented deaths in a recent semi-truck collision on I-44 near Doolittle. With about 13 of these devices dispatched from Springfield and more than 100 across southwest Missouri, officials urge drivers to slow down and pay attention in work zones as TMA-related crashes continue to rise statewide.
   

5. Midwest Tech drops cosmetology program (qctimes.com) — Midwest Technical Institute is phasing out its cosmetology program in Moline and will also discontinue cosmetology, medical coding, dental assisting and medical assisting programs at its Springfield campus. Current Springfield students will be taught out to completion, but no new applicants will be accepted, affecting local training options for several in-demand careers.
