📰 News we're reading

1. More St. Louisans could get radiation relief (stlamerican.com) — Many St. Louis-area residents living near radioactive waste sites could soon qualify for much larger federal compensation payments, including parents whose children died from related illnesses. A new bipartisan bill would add nine local ZIP codes, expand the list of covered cancers, remove age limits for leukemia, and boost payouts up to $150,000, while keeping applications open through 2027.

2. St. Louis aldermen advance data center regulations (firstalert4.com) — St. Louis aldermen have advanced some of the nation's toughest data center rules, aiming to protect neighborhoods from heat and energy impacts while still attracting new investment. The updated regulations tighten renewable energy and sustainability requirements and now head to the city's Planning Commission, as environmental advocates warn large facilities can raise nearby temperatures and utility bills.

3. St. Louis County residents organize to oppose proposed clean-fill landfill at inactive quarry in South County (kmov.com) — Neighbors in south St. Louis County are mobilizing against a proposed clean‑fill landfill at the inactive Ruprecht Quarry, which could operate for up to 15 years if approved. Residents say they weren't properly notified and worry about air, water, and truck traffic, while a council representative says most council members currently oppose the project and no vote date is set yet.

4. Festival of Nations returns to Tower Grove Park with record vendor turnout (ksdk.com) — Tower Grove Park is hosting the Festival of Nations this weekend, bringing more than 100,000 visitors to sample food, music, and art from over 80 cultures right in St. Louis. With a record 215 vendors and free, community-focused programming from the International Institute, the event highlights immigrant communities, supports local small businesses, and reinforces the city's long multicultural tradition.

5. The New Becky Thatcher Arrives At St. Louis Riverfront (waterwaysjournal.net) — A new riverboat, the Becky Thatcher, has arrived at the Gateway Arch riverfront and will soon offer additional cruises along downtown St. Louis. Bi-State Development invested millions in repairs and upgrades to modernize the historic-style vessel while keeping its classic charm.
