📰 News we're reading

1. Report mostly favorable to Sabey data center in Butte, but criticisms and concerns remain (msuexponent.com) — A Butte-Silver Bow ad hoc committee’s report is largely positive about the proposed $1 billion Sabey data center in Butte, projecting about 200 jobs and millions in local tax revenue, while saying water and power impacts should be manageable. Still, watchdogs and at least one commissioner argue the panel leans pro-project, want Sabey to answer questions directly, and worry about housing pressures and higher utility costs.

2. Woman charged with negligent homicide in Butte refused to attend arraignment (nbcmontana.com) — A woman jailed in Butte-Silver Bow Detention Center on negligent homicide and evidence-tampering charges is refusing to leave her cell for arraignment, forcing the court to delay the hearing until next week. Prosecutors allege she restrained another woman during a suspected overdose at a Butte residence last fall instead of seeking help, and she remains held on $500,000 bond.

3. Montana Folk Festival returns next month, organizers need volunteer help (montanarightnow.com) — Uptown Butte is gearing up to host the free Montana Folk Festival July 10–12, and organizers say they need 850–900 local volunteers for four-hour shifts to pull it off. With four stages, 22 performers, added shade tents, and strong local business support, they’re asking residents to sign up online to keep one of the Mining City’s signature summer events thriving.

4. Motor Carrier Services 'best kept secret' in Montana law enforcement (kpax.com) — From a base in Butte’s Motor Carrier Services quietly monitors truck weigh stations and recently helped spark a major drug bust near Dillon that seized over 100 pounds of suspected drugs. Officers say most truckers are cooperative, but their inspections and information-sharing are crucial for catching bad actors, protecting highways, and safeguarding taxpayer-funded roads and bridges.
